Another elderly press is being going to a US publisher in a move GWS commercial director Eric van Kessel says is "exemplary" of a strategy change in the country's market.
The company is shipping a Goss Urbanite press from southern Sweden to an undisclosed buyer later this summer.
"The US newspaper printing industry has gone through a real change over the last number of years, in large as a result of the digitalisation of the industry," says van Kessel.
"An important number of newspaper printing sites have been closed and the combination of publishing and printing is not longer seen as core business for many of the traditional daily newspapers."
He says the consolidation has been "a logical step" in preparing the newspaper printing industry for "the future to come".
"More and more printing is seen as an industrial production process whereby the cost of production has become relevant like it is in any other manufacturing environment."
He believes printed product - and therefore also the printed newspaper - will remain in place for many years to come, and has noted an increase in the number of single-width newspaper presses they sell. "Newspaper printers realise they need to focus on printing a wider range of formats and have started to focus more on cost control."
The Urbanite for the US customer has 14-units, including two four-high towers and two three-high towers, a folder and five reel stands. It will be dismantled in late summer prior to shipping.
