Journal Graphics - the standalone printing business formed from Oregon's Daily Journal of Commerce - is to install a 16-page Goss M-600 press system with sheeter at its facility in Portland.

Founded in 1925 and a separate division since 1996, the company specialises in publication, commercial, catalogue and direct-mail print, and the new highly-automated 60,000 iph shaftless five-unit press will enable it to increase output and press uptime.

Chief executive Phil Bridge says Journal looks to install the latest, most reliable technology that enhance capabilities and meet customers' changing needs: "The M-600 will enable us to better meet short and long-run print requirements as well as expand our product capabilities and ensure we can do this faster, more efficiently and with higher quality than our competitors.

The specification includes automatic plate changing for all five units, Goss Omnicon press controls, a JF55 folder, Ecocool/T dryer, web break detection and Vits-Rotocut S sheeter.

Goss west district sales manager Dave Gilmore says Journal president Dianne Bullas approached the investment decision with a clear focus on the next step in the company's development and a drive to deliver the best solution for both customers and employees. "This investment not only demonstrates a commitment to print but also the importance of quick makeready, low waste and versatile print solutions in servicing discerning customers," he says.
