The second CT – of six double-width four-high tower units, a jaw folder, six reelstands and automated paper logistics – has been earmarked for subsidiary Bold/Sydsvenskan Tryck in Malmö.
A special feature is two eight-high towers, allowing the press to be significantly shorter while still similar in height to a conventional four-high tower or satellite press. Tis makes it possible to install it in an existing building, where it replaces 1990s press supplied by another manufacturer.
The order takes KBA's sales figures in Europe and North America to 21 Commander CT installations with a total of 105 double and triple-width towers. Several of these presses also incorporate dryers to facilitate semi-commercial printing.
Bold chairman Leif Wiklund says the decision to buy the first press – for the DNEX Tryckeriet plant in Kista, near Stockholm – followed intensive evaluation. “Given the many benefits, it was only logical to choose another Commander CT for in Malmö.”
Björn Ridhammar, managing director of Bold/Sydsvenskan Tryck says the company could only consider a solution which did not require major construction work or restrictions for current production. “The CT permits two four-high towers to be stacked into an approximately ten-metre eight-high tower,” he says. “Consequently, the exchange process in steps, with switchover from old equipment to new, will be easier with this layout.”
The new press is to print dailies including ‘Sydsvenskan’, the local ‘Kvällsposten’ edition of national ‘Expressen’, and the ‘Metro’ freesheet. It will have a 560 mm cut-off and a maximum web width of 1590 mm, printing at up to 90,000 cph.
