Bot opportunity imagined as Flash automates news programming

Reimagining Flash, Foxtel’s struggling third streaming service, will see its two-person editorial team relocated back to News Corp Australia.

Instead the two-year-old service will be led by its technology and operations team, rather than editorial.

Those affected include former news.com.au editor-in-chief Kate de Brito (pictured) and James Law, recruited from the NCA newswire business.

Binge, Kayo and Flash chief executive Julian Ogrin told staff the changes were based on subscriber feedback and to future-proof the platform. They reflected “a more mature business” based on 18 months of learning what subscribers valued.

“Like any good start-up, we adjust and evolve,” he said.

“Ground-breaking work in original editorial and content curation” has opened up new opportunities in automation, with Flash moving away from creation and curation to “more automated” curation and news source programming.

Ogrin insisted that Flash would continue to be central to the company’s plans, with no changes to the core Flash streaming service, which offers more than 4000 hours of live programming a week and more than 1100 news shows and documentaries.

Live news sources and channels will still be supported by Hero and Tile carousels, “all the things that the subscribers value most about Flash”.
