Famous for its sand plains and ‘leatherstocking’ connections, Rome, New York, wasn’t built in a day.

But switch of its 160-year-old Rome Sentinel to a multiplatform-capable editorial system has been an overnight success.

The Oneida County daily – which has a circulation of 12,500 copies – is one of the country’s oldest family owned newspapers, with origins in 1821 and daily publication since 1882. It has been run by the same family for six generations.

A move to Roxen’s Editorial Portal prepares for the transformation of the newspaper’s editorial process with provision for future needs including all digital channels. Publisher Stephen B. Waters says the system has been a time and money saver: “It significantly improves staff efficiency creating content for print and online simultaneously.

“The first truly web based editorial system with built in InDesign functionality ensures ease of use and flexibility for our staff,” he says.

The Rome system operates as a local cloud solution, with Roxen hosting, managing, monitoring and upgrading the software. The number of users is flexible, software upgrades accessible, and the company says there is no need to locally manage hardware.
