Guam's Pacific Daily News and a news magazine in Paris are the latest to commit to digital printing.

The Gannett-owned Guam title will be the first US-owned newspaper to be printed on Kodak's Prosper 5000Xli inkjet web. About 20,000 copies are printed for distibution throughout the island and the Marianas, as well as weekly supplements and special sections, quarterly and yearly magazines.

Finishing will be on a manroland FoldLine system, capable of producing up to 96 pages tabloid or broadsheet in up to 12 sections. Kodak technicians will provide training so that the Pacific Daily News team can handle maintenance. Shipping of the press and finishing system is imminent, with installation scheduled by the end of the year

About the same time, Sogemedia - a French media company that produces localised weekly news publications - will take delivery of a Prosper 6000C inkjet.

Regional newspapers will get "more relevant content" based on a reader's location, with regionalised advertising opportunities for local businesses.

Kodak says it will also debut a new violet plate it calls the Libra VP at WPE in Hamburg next week.

The company says newspaper printers that conventionally-process plates will be able to simplify processing and reduce environmental impact by replacing their traditional developer and replenisher with a single, low-pH clean-out finisher. The same finisher, printers can be used in an EasyChem setup that removes the plate wash steps, using either a modified conventional processor or a dedicated clean-out unit.
