Hywood gets Digital Directions date

Newly-appointed chief executive and managing director of Fairfax Media Greg Hywood is among speakers at next week’s Digital Directions 2011 one-day conference in Sydney.

Fairfax Digital editor-in-chief Mike van Niekerk is also scheduled to speak.

The event follows the success of Media 2010 and a similar conference in 2009. Billed as “an international gathering of digital thought leaders”, it has previously delivered a heady mix of media executives and entrepreneurs.

This year’s line-up includes:

Tim Wu (a professor at Columbia Law School and author of ‘The Master Switch’ and ‘Who Controls the Internet’) will appear from New York via video link;

Los Angeles-based Robert Tercek is one of the world’s most prolific creators of interactive content;

Product visionary Anthony Rose is a former chief technical officer of YouView and Future Media Controller BBC (London);

Baratunde Thurston, director of digital at The Onion, New York;

Gigi Wang, chair emeritus of the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab, San Francisco;

Rajat Paharia, founder and chief product officer of Bunchball, San Francisco;

Riyaad Minty, head of social media at Al Jazeera (Qatar) (by video link);

Vanessa Fox, author of ‘Marketing in the Age of Google’ and creator of Google’s Webmaster Central (Seattle);

Kevin Anderson, ‘journalism entrepreneur’, freelance journalist and digital strategist (London);

Joshua Hatch, online content manager, Sunlight Live (Washington DC);

Tony Chen, managing director of GroupM Interaction, China, and leading internet industry expert (Beijing); and

Tan Le, cofounder and president of Emotiv (San Francisco).
