Four new automated cranes are part of a modernisation programme at Palm’s paper reel warehouse in Germany.
Papierfabrik Palm makes containerboard at the Wörth location, and already uses automated cranes at its adjacent reel store. The new contract has seen two existing Konecranes automated cranes in two of the six bays, replaced by four new cranes. Crane runways are being renewed and the entire material flow system optimised. The project also includes vacuum lifters and extensive software upgrades, with implementation set for completion next year.
This is Konecranes’ first implementation of the control system for floor-based material handling equipment, expanding its expertise beyond traditional crane automation. The company’s Markus Otto says what began with the delivery of cranes has evolved into “a true partnership over the years – shaped by jointly planned and executed projects, particularly in material flow optimisation and efficiency improvements”.
Palm Containerboard CTO Jürgen Kosse says expansion and modernisation of the crane concept in Wörth means they can increase loading capacity by 30 per cent.
“The resulting performance increase redefines just-in-time delivery for our customers,” he said.
