Planet’s new orbit takes it back in time

We’ve always liked the idea of a newspaper called the Telluride Daily Planet – almost as much as our near neighbour, the Cooroy Rag – and now its title is set to change under new ownership.

The Hoffmann Family of Companies – which owns the Hoffmann Media Group – has announced a pending agreement to acquire the 127-year-old Daily Planet and sister publications the Norwood Post, Telluride Style and Shelter Magazine.

Originally founded in 1898 as the Telluride Times, the  Daily Planet covers the Colorado town and surrounding San Miguel County.

The deal – terms of which have not been disclosed – is expected to close next month, according to Dirks, Van Essen & April, which represented the Planet in the transaction.

Hoffmann Media chief executive J. Pason Gaddis described Telluride as a “vibrant, world-class community” and said strong local journalism was essential to keeping it informed, connected and resilient.

Hoffmann plan to revert to the historic name of Telluride Times, with the paper continuing under existing local leadership. There are also plans for enhanced digital capabilities and expanded local coverage.

The announcement follows Hoffmann Media’s June acquisition of family-owned Missourian Media in Washington, Missouri. Hoffmann Media’s portfolio also includes the Napa Valley Register, St Helena Star, Florida Weekly, Babcock Ranch Telegraph, Ave Maria Sun, Town Chronicle, St. Ignace News, Mackinac Island Town Crier, Florida Health Care News, and iFoundMyDoctor.com.

Parent the Hoffmann Family of Companies is a multi-vertical, family-owned private equity firm consisting of over 120 global brands and employing 17,000 in 30 countries.
