Strengthening its hold on the “Philly ’burbs”, O’Rourke Media has bought triweekly Metro Philadelphia, Metro.us and the Philly Sports Network from Schneps Media.

The deal will make O’Rourke the biggest newspaper presence in the Philadelphia market with total circulation exceeding 180,000 delivered to mailboxes and high traffic locations across the region.

The “essential guide” to all things Philly,  Metro Philadelphia is published in print three times a week and online everyday, with a focus on latest news, local events and lifestyle.

Welcoming the Metro team, group chief executive and owner Jim O’Rourke said they currently published 11 local newspapers with local websites in the Philly suburbs – Bucks County and Montgomery County. “Adding such a strong brand, newspaper and digital presence with Metro and the Philly Sports Network is super exciting and will position us to achieve significant audience and revenue growth with a big focus on digital.”

Schneps Media chief executive Joshua Schneps said he was happy to pass the torch to Jim O’Rourke: “He is taking on a terrific team that will benefit from his leadership, commitment to local news and knowledge of the Philadelphia market. I wish him and the team the best of luck.”

O’Rourke described Schneps Media – the largest local news media company in New York state with daily and weekly community newspapers – as “without a doubt one of the best local media businesses in the country”.

The sale officially closes on July 31. Dirks, Van Essen & April is representing Schneps Media in the transaction, terms of which were not disclosed.

Established in 2018 as a holding company with a few newspapers, family-owned O’Rourke Media is now an industry-leading, digital media company with a group of award-winning hyper-local print newspapers and niche magazines in eight states and 37 markets.
