The Australian government has thrown a $33 million “lifeline” to Trove, the online portal which act as a central point for the country’s print newspaper archive.

The National Library of Australia facility was in danger with the expiry of funding.

Arts minister Tony Burke and finance minister Katy Gallagher announced the $33 million over four years, as well as $9.2 million in indexed ongoing annual funding.

The Australina Newspaper History Group’s newsletter reported that the library had been facing a $13 million cut to its operating budget from July when the former Coalition government’s funding for Trove ended.

Trove will now funded on an ongoing basis and its budget will rise to offset inflation.
