Winning over journalism’s critics a topic for Congress

With the first day of WAN-Ifra’s World News Media Congress coinciding with World News Day, a special session is planned to show #JournalismMatters.

The global news industry campaign will be kickstarted in Zaragoza, Spain on September 28 with a WNMC session that celebrates journalism that has made a difference and also acknowledges that many do not share our faith in journalism.

How do we reset journalism so its value is recognised and its appeal broadened?

In an age of news avoidance and polarisation, how do we convince detractors, and young people, of journalism’s social value?

These are some of the questions to be answered by some of the industry’s big thinkers.

They include Shirish Kulkarni, community organiser of the UK-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Washington Post director of next generation audiences Phoebe Connelly, and David Walmsley, editor of Canada’s Globe and Mail.

Also taking part is Madhav Chinnappa of principal sponsor Google, while Vivian Schiller (The Aspen Institute), Kathy English (chair of the Canadian Journalism Foundation), and Singapore Straits Times editor and president of the World Editors Forum Warren Fernandez will guide the conversation.

Find out more about World News Day and how to join the campaign.
