Values recognised in INMA awards, with pandemic priorities

Jun 04, 2021 at 12:07 pm by admin

Standout projects such as Stuff’s ‘Our Truth’ declaration and the Hindustan Times Code-a-Thon “coding Olympiad” saw the Asia Pacific well represented in INMA’s Global Media Awards competition.

The virtual announcements – running from 10.30 on Thursday morning – came from all over the world, with members of INMA’s Young Professionals committee Mari-Marthe Aamold (Norway), Brinda Kumar (India), Katharina Neubert (US), Nicholas O’Connor (Chile), Saarah Survé (South Africa), Nine’s Belle Tayler (Australia) and Tee Zhuo (Singapore) doing the honours, under the eye of Jamaican TV host Terri-Karelle Reid and “analysis” from sponsor GNI’s Robbie Brown.

German’s Mittelbayerische Zeitung took the top prize for its collaborative ‘Drive’ initiative in which fellow German regional publishers shared data, resources and insights.

The ceremony broadcast via INMA.org and on YouTube and Facebook, saw 58 first-place winners across 20 categories. Eleven companies won multiple first-place awards. Hindustan Times, News Corp Australia, Newsday Media Group, Nine, and NZME were among nine winners with two first places.

Regional winners – selected from finalists – were: Asia/Pacific: Stuff for “Ta Matou Pono, Our Truth”; South Asia: The Hindustan Times for “Hindustan Times Code-a-Thon: India's Largest Coding Olympiad”; Africa: Nation Media Group for “Nation Leadership Forum”; Europe: Mittelbayerische Zeitung for "Drive”; Latin America: El Colombiano for “Dame tres minutos y te explico”; and North America: The Globe and Mail for “Fully dynamic, personalised, real-time paywall”.

INMA executive director and chief executive Earl Wilkinson said this year’s outstanding entries “leaned heavily into COVID responses” along with shifting priorities including product, data and subscriptions.

“Another underlying theme was about communicating the values held by news brands amid the misinformation explosion and the rise of algorithms, data, and machine learning in the everyday running of a media company.”
