Specialist knowledge of Goss’s CT50 reelstands has helped Harland Simon to an upgrade contract from Singapore Press Holdings. The UK headquartered company will install new drives and controls for the 40 CT50 reelstands on four Goss Colorliner presses at SPH’s Jurong Road site. Obsolete proprietary systems are being replaced with those based on industry standard, off-the-shelf components will eliminate obsolete proprietary systems. The company says splice and waste performance will also be improved and maintenance time reduced. Swiss control systems rival ABB has been involved in a major retrofit to the four presses, but SPH decided Harland Simon had the runs on the board when it came to the Goss splicers. “They had the solution which best met our requirements and a successful track record in the replacement of Goss reelstand controls,” says executive vice president of production Anthony Cheng. The standard Harland Simon will be customised to suit the specific needs including interfaces to both new and legacy press control systems, the roll handling, colour register and outfeed tension systems. Another new feature is the use of full colour HMI touchscreens for comprehensive setting and diagnostic functions. In addition to the control equipment Harland Simon will provide new encoders for the dancer position feedback, spider rotation feedback and belt drive control. In addition all the reelstands will be networked to a centralised maintenance PC for support and diagnostics which is also connected to 24/7 on line support service.
