An ongoing project at the Des Moines Register will see Harland Simon upgrade two folders including web break detectors on the angle bar nests.

This next stage follows upgrade of interbus loop encoders on one folder of the manroland press.

Replacing the remaining proprietary loop encoders and detectors, Harland Simon install remote I/O to better interface the new devices and enable use of off-the-shelf components such as proximity sensors and encoders.

HS Americas managing director John Staiano says for newspapers faced with this level of proprietary hardware, a phased approach is often the only viable way.
