Students at Siam University's Institute of Engineering, Printing have shown off the capability of the department's carefully rebuilt manroland newspaper press with a special magazine edition covering facilities available.

A range of interesting feature stories include a discussion of the ability of students to repair and maintain presses, with a focus on topics such as predictive maintenance and understanding control technology. This extends the useful life of the equipment and makes a contribution to the environment.

The Uniman 2/2 press itself is a classic example of the college at work: Its printing units and folder, together with ancillary MEG paster and Ferag conveyor - a gift from the local 'Thairath Daily' - were painstakingly renovated by 38 first and second-year students as part of their bachelor degree course. Students are in the care of Kitti Yimnlamai, who joined the institute after retiring from the 'Thairath Daily'.

With the newspaper press - which prints one colour and one mono web - now taking pride of place at the college, recent projects have included rebuilding a two-colour Heidelberg MO and other sheetfed offset presses.

The 16-page special edition includes colour photographs of the press, students and college personnel. It also covers visits undertaken by students - among them to the newspaper and printing plants of ‘Daily News’, 'Thairath', 'Matichon', the 'Bangkok Post', Business News and heatset printer Cyber Printing International - as well as an overview of the Thai printing, packaging and paper industries.
