Upgrade of a Goss Newsliner at Trib Total Media's Tribune Review is continuing following replacement of controls last year.
Harland Simon is replacing aging Allen-Bradley 1336 AC lineshaft drives, following a 2015 project to upgrade of Meridian/Echelon controls on the press.
Last year the group unveiled a strategic plan which included consolidation of three Pittsburgh area titles into the Tribune-Review and closure of its Greensburg printing operation.
The press project includes replacement of five drives with Allen-Bradley's latest-generation PowerFlex drive modules, eliminating obsolete and unsupported components as well as safeguarding against lineshaft drive failures which have affected production and resulted in having to run the press at slower speeds. The new drives will be integrated with a Drive Master ControlLogix PLC introduced with the Meridian/Echelon upgrade. The installation will be carried out without interrupting production.
Diagnostic tools and an AB RSLogix 5000 package will monitor performance so that any future issues can be rapidly resolved.
