With live-feed news apps the hot topic, Atex and Miles 33 are among publishing systems companies using alliances to deliver the technology.

Atex this week announced an international partnership which will integrate Applix’s Viewerplus into its content platform.

And Miles 33 – which acquired VirtualCom Interactive last November – says it has passed the two million pages-per-day milestone with apps based on their technology.

Applix is a four-year-old Italian former startup which focusses on mobile products and apps for banks, businesses and publishing. Its Viewerplus product was launched with Atex at the World Newspaper Congress in Turin last week, and will be at the FIPP Innovation Forum in London.

Applix chief executive Claudio Somazzi calls it “a mix of platforms and experiences” which he says is at the top of innovation and performance: “This new important strategic and business partnership with Atex relies on all the innovation of the Viewerplus platform and the results achieved in supporting successfully the presence of publishers and partners on mobile devices,” he says.

Atex global sales director Federico Marturano says the combination of products will create a new digital publishing paradigm in which the tablet becomes an integral part of the multichannel production workflow.

Miles 33 says its flagship ePaper product VirtualNewspaper “already dominates” Italian newspaper market and is seeing growing success in other parts of Europe, southeast Asia, the UK and US.

Cloud hosting company OVH featured the mobile suite during its global tour, promoting benefits of moving operations into cloud-based solutions.

Miles’ mobile publishing suite includes ‘page-flip’ and archive products, plus a new dynamic news reader app for ‘mobile first’ workflows.

VirtualCom cofounder Gianluigi Cavallo says the acquisition by Miles 33 – which is backed by private equity firm American Capital – has brought “amazing benefits” with faster development and global sales reach already bearing fruit.
