Megatrends support digital newspaper printing, according to PrintCity’s DRUPA guide

Digital printing of newspapers is a concept whose time has come, according to vendors’ group PrintCity.

The organisation has produced a 24-page PrintCity@drupa guide in English, in advance of the Düsseldorf show, with a German language version available shortly.

While the ramp-up phase for digitally-printed newspapers has been longer than predicted, it has now reached an industrial level both for its quality and business models, and is reinforced by megatrends such as diversification and individualisation, the guide says. “The result is a significant increase in acceptance and installations that will continue to accelerate.”

The guide also discusses newspaper press upgrades and reconfiguration as an alternative to new installations.

The 28 members of PrintCity taking part with it at DRUPA include digital and web-offset systems makers Océ and manroland, as well as Baumüller, Cofely, Eltosch, Finest Fog, Fujifilm, Hochschule der Medien, International Association ClimateCalc, Kurz, Media Mundo, Megtec, Merck, Metrics Information Systems, Metsä Board, PEFC, PrintGraph, Procemex, Sappi, Sonoco Alcore, Tolerans, Trelleborg, UPM, Vision in Print, Weilburger Graphics, Westland and WPCF.

Four ‘hot topic’ subjects are the focus of presentations: digital  and offset printing, ‘tune-up your web press; value added printing and packaging, and lean and green opportunities.

Says marketing and communications director David Stamp, “Nowhere else at DRUPA can you meet such a range of companies, already working together, sharing their knowledge.”
