While Fairfax Media contemplates cutting circulation in remote areas, Melbourne rival the ‘Herald Sun’ is looking to expand sales in such areas.
The Newspaper Works ‘News Now’ newsletter reports the Herald & Weekly Times is bringing forward print deadlines its early Saturday edition to ensure copies reach regional parts of Victoria.
Readers in Bendigo, Ballarat, Daylesford, Castlemaine and Maldon will be able to buy later editions of the newspaper, thanks to earlier printing times which leave more time to distribute the second edition.
Editor Simon Pristel says he hopes the expanded distribution footprint would cement the position of the 'Herald Sun’ position as the “news leader for Victoria”.
Fairfax Media chief executive Greg Hywood floated the idea of cutting distribution of printed copies to remote areas following a business briefing last month.
At the time, a Fairfax spokesperson said no final decisions have been made: “We are responding to our readers and wider audiences changing ways that they want to get their media."
