Developer Atex has launched a new system for tablet editions built using HTML5 and designed to integrate with its ad management solution for the platforms.

Lightweight editions produced with the software will be quicker to download and easier to navigate, the company says. Features include app navigation – such as scrolling and tapping – with a user experience developed using HTML5.

The company says the approach allows editions to be designed with hyperlinks, videos and other web capabilities, avoiding bulky PDF files and other formats which can take minutes to download. Use of HTML5 means editions will be available on a wide variety of platforms including the iPad and Android-based devices.

Global vice president of product management Peter Marsh says the tablet publishing product integrates with existing editorial infrastructures: “Article templates are designed for automatic placement on tablet pages, and support for layout-driven workflow and WSYIWYG editing streamlines the process for teasers, headlines and other write-to-fit elements,” he says.

Tablet pages and layouts can be reviewed from a browser, which previews the look-and-feel of the tablet edition.

“We’ve developed Atex Tablet Publishing with the goal of helping media clients enrich their brands across all print, online and mobile channels, as well as to enable a deeper, more personalised relationship with readers, subscribers and advertisers.”

The product is available either as hosted ‘software as a service’ or on-site.
